De jaarlijkse Sint-Rochusverlichting is ongetwijfeld het grootste toeristische evenement van de stad Aarschot. Duizenden kaarsjes zorgen elk jaar opnieuw voor een sfeervol en feeëriek geheel en lokken duizenden bezoekers naar de ‘Parel van het Hageland’.

Op de avond van 15 augustus wordt naar jaarlijkse traditie alle elektrische verlichting in Aarschot en de omliggende wijken gedoofd tussen 21 uur en middernacht en hult de stad zich in een donker gewaad. De inwoners van Aarschot verlichten hun woningen dan met duizenden kaarsjes en ook de handelaars wordt gevraagd om hun etalages sfeervol te verlichten. Een prachtige gewoonte die de gezellige Demerstad onderdompelt in een magische sfeer. Het feeërieke schouwspel heeft elk jaar opnieuw opvallende extra’s te bieden en wordt steeds gekruid met tal van toeristische en culturele activiteiten.

The yearly Saint Roch Candle Night is undoubtedly the main tourist attraction of the township of Aarschot. Year after year, thousands of lit candles conjure up a magical and fairylike atmosphere and attract thousands of visitors to Aarschot, the "Pearl of the Hageland" ("Hedge Country").
Thousands of candles transform Aarschot's façades and streets into fabulous scenes
A time-honoured tradition has it that on the evening of 15 August all electrical lights are extinguished in Aarschot and the surrounding neighbourhoods between 09:00 P.M. and midnight and the city envelops itself in a cloak of darkness. The citizens of Aarschot then illuminate their houses with myriads of candles and also the local shopkeepers cooperate by lighting up their window displays in an enchanting way. This picturesque habit immerses the cosy town bordering the river Demer in a magical atmosphere. Every single year this fairylike spectacle has striking new features to offer and it is spiced up with several tourist and cultural activities.
How it started
The Saint Roch Candle Night originated from a promise of the inhabitants of Aarschot to light candles on the eve of the name feast of Saint Roch, patron saint of the town, if they would be spared from the plague. Rumour had it that Saint Roch had
earlier saved the population of Aarschot on numerous occasions of the Black Death. Out of gratitude originally only the town hall was lit with candles1 on 15 August, but around 1850 this remarkable tradition spread throughout the entire town.

Comme la tradition le souhaite, le soir du 15 août à partir de 21 heures, toutes les lumières électriques sont éteintes partout dans la ville, aussi bien dans le centre-ville que dans les quartiers environnants. A ce moment, les habitants d'Aarschot illuminent leurs maisons au moyen de petits cierges. Les commerçants sont aussi recommandés à illuminer leurs vitrines. Une coutume magnifique empreigne cette ville accueillante, où coule la Demer, d'une atmosphère magique. Ce spectacle majestueux est également chaque année pourvu d'autres activités culturelles et touristiques.
Un clin d'œil historique
L'illumination de Saint Roch commença lors d'une promesse faite par la population d'Aarschot. Celle-ci pria son patron de les épargner de la mort noire et promit de brûler de milliers de cierges à la veille de la fête de Saint Roch. Autrefois, Saint Roch aurait déjà à plusieurs reprises sauvé ces habitants de cette mort atroce. Au début, seule la mairie fût par signe de gratitude chaque 15 août illuminée. Vers 1850, cette belle tradition s'est étendue à travers toute la ville.
L'illumination de Saint Roch est un événement non seulement sublime, mais surtout unique vu que nulle part vous ne verrez un tel spectacle qui trouve ses racines dans l'histoire de l'apaisante ville d'Aarschot. Cette manifestation appartenant au patrimoine culturel de la ville d'Aarschot vaut certainement le déplacement.
